The doors on the zoo’s single biggest investment in its 45-year history are set to open this summer so we tasked the nation’s schools to help with decorating the indoor areas.

The competition was split into three categories for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3, with each group being given an age appropriate task.

Key Stage 1 pupils were asked to draw their best picture of an elephant and five-year-old Kacper Pietrzak from Holy Saviour RCP School in Nelson won with a gorgeous drawing of an elephant called Sfen!

Key Stage 2 were tasked with researching Asian elephants in Sri Lanka and writing or illustrating their favourite fact, with Anupam Cunden from Leicester Grammar School and his fact ‘Elephants create low frequency rumbles to communicate over a long distance’ taking top spot.

High school students in Key Stage 3 also needed to conduct research and have the option of contacting Blackpool Zoo’s conservation team for further information in order to pull together a 30 second to two minute video about Asian elephants in Sri Lanka.

Millfield Science & Performing Arts College’s year eight pupils created a fantastic video with more than 23 students taking part!

The winners, along with 20 runners up will have their artwork reproduced and displayed in the new elephant house throughout summer while the Key Stage 3 winners and runners up will have their short film aired in the zoo’s conservation room.

Other prizes include free educational items from our website and we will also make a £100 donation in each of the winning school’s names to BECT, who will buy school textbooks for children that live in areas close to wild elephants.
