Why custom classroom displays make the biggest difference in student engagement

Here at EPSL, we know just how busy teachers are – that’s why we offer teacher planners and personalised exercise books, so that you and your students can stay on track. Even so, we know that dedicating a little extra time to decorating your classroom can make a big difference – after all, there’s nothing quite like a good wall display to transform a classroom! Even now, many of us will be able to picture the bright colours, eye-catching images and interesting facts we admired on the walls as children. But wall displays are more than just nice decorations. Here’s how you can use custom classroom displays to improve student engagement!

Why custom classroom displays make the biggest difference in student engagement

Encourage student participation

A wall display isn’t just something your students can admire – they can also play a part in shaping it! From self-portraits to artwork inspired by topics covered in lessons, every student can contribute. Seeing their own work on the wall instils a sense of ownership and pride, making them feel valued and encouraged. Custom wall displays can also be used to show children how rewarding it is to do their best and reach their goals. Why not build a display where students create handprints with their names and a target for the term or year ahead? They can then look back and see how far they’ve come, motivating them to keep up the good work!

Emphasise the school’s values

Displaying your school’s values means that students are consistently being reminded of behaviour expectations, helping to shape a welcoming and inclusive classroom culture that makes everyone eager to come into school each day. Emphasising shared values also helps to build a collective sense of belonging and pride, which can improve student engagement and even academic performance.

You can always start with something simple, like the logo surrounded by the core values, and take it from there, using your school’s colours to really reinforce a sense of identity. Again, you can use this as an opportunity for collaboration – for example, you could add quotes from students describing what they like about the school, so that they feel like their voice matters.

Create a bright, engaging work environment

What sounds better – a blank white wall or a space filled with colour and detail? Bright, dynamic wall displays can quickly take your classroom from tedious to engaging, boosting your students' mood, inspiring creativity and providing a welcoming, appealing environment to learn in. Most teachers tend to find that the displays that do best with students have blank walls in between, so when creating your wall display, be mindful that you aren’t going too over the top – keep walls lively but organised.
