Top 3 revision techniques for primary school kids

Primary school students can often find studying and revision quite difficult, and that’s completely normal! However, it’s an essential part of the academic journey, so it’s definitely a skill worth introducing early on in their lives to ensure they have plenty of time to get used to it before they need it later on in life. Here at EPSL, we’ve been working within the education sector for over 45 years and we’ve learned that great revision techniques are crucial for effective learning and retaining information. So, here are some of the best revision techniques that you can teach to your primary school kids to help introduce them to the idea of knowledge retention.

Create a study schedule

Encouraging your students to take the time and create a schedule can be a really beneficial practice for your students. Advise them to allocate time for each homework task and incentivise them to stick to the schedule. This can help them to avoid last-minute cramming, and reduce the amount of stress they feel towards homework.
In addition to this, it’s also a good idea to suggest taking short breaks after a period of study – it’s also a valuable way to help refresh the mind, and therefore improve concentration. So, it’s worth adding rest periods to your pupil’s study schedule as it can have a really positive impact on the effectiveness of the study session. Some of the ways in which your students can reward themselves after completing a task or reaching a goal include having a snack or playing a game (anything to take their minds off studying really!).

Visual aids and practice

Pictures, diagrams, and mind maps can help your students to visualise and understand complex concepts. This technique is particularly useful for visual learners who remember information better when it is presented in a visually stimulating format.

What’s more, taking practice tests is an effective way to assess your pupil’s understanding of a topic. It also helps to identify areas where they need to focus more. You can encourage your students to use online quizzes or create your own questions, watch educational videos or listen to podcasts related to the subjects they struggle with. All are good ways of practising!

Encourage revision within a stimulating environment

Primary school pupils these days are exposed to a lot of distractions. It’s difficult to settle down to a question paper on fractions when you’ve got a television, game console or smartphone present! This is fine during their free time and on the weekends, but a lot of the time these distractions only serve to hamper revision. So, advise your pupils to revise in a space that’s free from all distractions, as this will make for a far more enriching revision session. Whether that’s the dining table or their bedroom, so long as the distractions are minimal, they’ll get a lot more done.

Those are just a few of the revision techniques that your primary school kids can use to improve their learning – you may well formulate a couple of your own! With regular practice and determination, and a quality selection of school exercise books, personalised exercise books and supplementary reading material to aid them, your pupils will have revision down to a T in no time.

Regardless, you’ll always need the best quality exercise books and materials at hand so that you and your students have everything you need to stay organised, motivated, and productive in the classroom.
