3 fun library activities to engage your pupils

Here at EPSL, we’re passionate about delivering the very best supplementary readingschool exercise books, and personalised exercise books to schools across the country. Having worked within the education sector for over 45 years, we understand the importance of reading on a regular basis for young school children. And of course, what better way to get your pupils reading is by taking them to the library?

With that in mind, here are a few of the most fun and creative library based activities you can do with your pupils.

3 fun library activities to engage your pupils

Create a book club

This is a great way for you to foster an environment for those who are open to the idea of reading, but haven’t quite mustered up the courage to do it on their own. You can arrange the club around different genres, authors, themes; it’s up to you! The point is to ensure that everyone in attendance is engaged by the material, and is keen to come back to continue the story. Ideally, this curiosity will translate over into your pupil’s personal lives.

Host a guided reading session

Guided reading is a fantastic way of introducing your pupils to a range of different genres and authors, and it’s a really supportive way of getting your pupils involved in the magic of stories. Libraries are the ideal setting for guided reading sessions, as they offer a wide variety of material to suit any taste, and the quiet, calming atmosphere can help to settle the mood of your class.

Write some book reviews

There’s a whole range of books for your pupils to choose from in the library, and book reviews are a great way for you to gauge whether or not your class has managed to grasp the material they pick out. A good way to structure this exercise is to separate your library trip out into two halves - the first half consisting of picking out a book and reading as much of it as they can, and the second half consisting of writing a review - you can even give your pupils writing prompts like “who was the main character of the story?” and “Did you enjoy what you read and why?”.

We’re all aware of the benefits that reading can afford pupils, and if you’re looking to find some ways you can encourage your pupils to start reading for fun as a way of supplementing their education, you can check out our piece on the top ways you can get your pupils reading for leisure.

So, those are our top picks for the most engaging library activities you can do with your pupils. Regardless, you could also create your very own small library in your classroom so you can do some of these activities when you can’t go to the library!

It all starts in the classroom, and while you’re busy encouraging the next generation of readers, we’ll continue to help by doing what we’re best at - supplying a huge range of school exercise books, personalised exercise books, and supplementary reading material to students of all ages so they have everything they need to achieve greatness in the classroom.
