Our top 3 general tips for primary school teachers

It’s fair to say that teaching primary school children can be quite the task. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to keep a room full of children engaged and focussed on a subject in which they may have zero initial interest, , and of course, there’s also an extra layer of challenge involved in effectively accommodating each pupil’s specific needs while maintaining order in the classroom as a whole.

Our top 3 general tips for primary school teachers

Here at EPSL, we’ve worked alongside the education sector for over 45 years, producing high quality school exercise bookspersonalised exercise books, and supplementary reading materials to schools across the UK. In that time, we’ve learned our fair share of tips and tricks from primary school teachers on how to manage a class-full of pupils. So, whether you’re just starting out on your teaching journey, or you’ve been in the job a while and you’re wondering how you can make life a little bit easier, here are our top three tips for primary school teachers.

Be a positive force in the classroom

Admittedly, this is sometimes much easier said than done. Everyone has those days where they just want to crawl up under the duvet and vanish from the world, but when you’re a primary school teacher, your mood can set the tone for the entire class. If you maintain a positive attitude, your pupils are far more likely to engage with what you’re teaching them, and they’ll feed off of the positive energy you provide. A positive attitude is almost infectious, so if you’re aiming to keep your class on-side, a few words of praise when they're getting things right will sit so much better than a heavy handed approach when things go wrong.

Be a model of good behaviour

Primary school pupils are very impressionable because of their age and level of maturity, so it’s up to you to set the standards for behaviour in the classroom. You can't expect your students to listen to you if you're not practicing what you preach - so, be sure to listen to them when they’re talking to you, try not raise your voice if you can help it, and encourage positive interactions between your students.

Get to know your students’ parents

Although you’ll spend a lot of time around your pupils, their parents will always be the most influential figures in their lives. So, it’s vital to get a feel for what your pupil’s lives are like outside of the classroom so you can offer up as little or as much support as necessary to their educational needs. Getting to know the parents of your pupils is a really effective way of gauging which pupils may require extra support in the class as a result of a difficult home life.

However, these tips will only get you so far without quality educational resources to supplement them. We can help you there - we provide a huge range of school exercise books, personalised exercise books, and supplementary reading material, so that you and your class have everything you need to stay organised, motivated, and productive.
