How you can show your pupils that planning is key

Planning is a crucial skill that can help your students achieve their goals efficiently and effectively. However, not all students immediately grasp how useful that honing their planning skills can be in the long term. So this week here at EPSL, we’ll break down some of the practical ways in which you can show your school pupils that planning is a really important aspect of both school and life in general.

How you can show your pupils that planning is key

Start with small tasks

One of the most effective ways to show pupils that planning is important is to start by introducing a planning strategy to smaller tasks. For example, ask pupils to plan their homework for the week, including what tasks they need to complete and when they plan to do them. This will help them to develop a basic understanding of planning and see how it can help them stay organised and on track.

What’s more, we’ve got just the tool to help them do just that - we offer a great range of primary school homework diaries here at EPSL, all at the very best prices. Each one features a layout that’s been carefully designed to be intuitive and easy to use, making it easier for your students to keep track of their progress so they can stay organised, motivated and engaged.

Discuss long-term goals

Another way to get your point across to your students is to discuss their long-term goals. Ask them about their aspirations for the future, whether it be a career, travel plans, or personal achievements (granted, they’re only very young at this point in their lives so some of the answers you receive could be a bit out there, but the point still stands!). Then, discuss with them the steps they will need to take to achieve those goals and the importance of planning ahead. This will help them to see the value of planning in achieving their dreams.

Use real-world examples

Using real-world examples is a great way to show pupils planning in action, as this will give them contextual evidence to support your claim that planning is a vital part of life. For example, you could discuss how chefs plan their menus or how athletes plan their training schedules (try to keep the examples as simple as possible so they’re easy to understand). These kinds of examples will help pupils to understand that planning is not just important for schoolwork, but for many aspects of life in general.

Emphasise the benefits

It's important to emphasise the benefits of planning to pupils. These benefits may include increased productivity, improved time management, and reduced stress. Discussing these benefits with pupils can help them to see that planning is a valuable tool for achieving success. A good way to get this point across is by asking your pupils how they feel when they know they have homework due the next day that they haven’t done. Then, follow this up with “do you think you’d feel better if you knew you’d already done your homework earlier in the week?” It’s a great way of getting your pupils thinking about how planning ahead and doing things early can help them in the long run.

By starting with small tasks, discussing long-term goals, using real-world examples, and emphasising the benefits of planning, your pupils can develop their planning skills and discover its uses. What’s more, if you need some quality printed supplies to help you demonstrate the importance of planning to your pupils, then we can help.
