Enjoy a nature walk
Who said outdoor lessons were just for summer? To celebrate everything that autumn has to offer, why not take your students on an exciting walk outdoors, even if it's only around school grounds, to collect beautiful autumn leaves, acorns, and conkers? This fun scavenger hunt activity will help your class foster a deeper appreciation for nature, and it's the perfect change of pace for autumn, especially since most lessons will take place inside due to poor weather over the next few months.
Make some autumnal/Halloween inspired arts and crafts
Embrace the spirit of autumn with seasonal crafts using natural materials gathered from your nature walks. Students can create leaf rubbings by placing leaves under their personalised exercise books and using crayons to rub over them, revealing the intricate patterns of the leaf's skeleton—it's both educational and spooky! They can also make colourful collages, garlands, and wreaths with the leaves, twigs, and other materials like pine cones they've collected on their nature walk, which you could use to create a seasonal display in your classroom.
Have a harvest festival party
Host a fun harvest festival party in your classroom to celebrate the season! This is a great chance to teach students about seasonal fruits and vegetables and why local farming is important. To help them learn about harvest traditions, provide colouring pages and puzzles that focus on the history of harvest festivals in England.
You can also plan some fun games, like apple bobbing or a mini scavenger hunt for autumn items. While having fun, your students will develop an understanding and appreciate the effort that goes into farming and where their foods come from. Why not even bring in a carved pumpkin to create a festive atmosphere?
Make science spooky
To keep things fresh and exciting, it's always fun to weave different season themes into your everyday lessons, like science, for example. There are plenty of fascinating science experiments related to autumn that you can easily facilitate with just the things you can find outside this time of year! Examples include studying the process of leaf decomposition by observing how leaves change over time or exploring the life cycle of plants as they prepare for winter.
These experiments enhance their understanding of nature and the seasonal changes happening around them. More importantly, they're fun and festive, and everyone has a better time learning when they're engaged!
Read and write fun Halloween stories
Now the days are growing shorter, it's the perfect time to embrace the spookier side of the season with Halloween stories. Encourage students to tap into their creativity and write their own eerie stories and then share them with the class. If you're looking for something a bit more subdued, we have a selection of seasonal stories in our publishing section. All of these stories capture the fun, spooky essence of Halloween while also incorporating important life lessons, educational themes and values. So whether it's spine-tingling scares or heartwarming messages you're after, there's something for everyone to enjoy this season!
