4 fun and simple Mother’s Day crafts for primary school children

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate the special women in our lives, but it’s important to remember that not everyone has a mum – for some children, it may be a dad, a grandparent, or another caregiver they wish to celebrate. What better way to do that than with fun, hands-on crafts? These simple and creative activities not only let children express their love for their mums or caregivers, but they also help develop fine motor skills, encourage creativity, and create a meaningful keepsake they can take home with them.

What’s more, to make things easier for busy teachers, we’ve chosen ideas that are quick to set up and require minimal materials – many of which you likely already have in your classroom!

Colourful handprint flowers

These handprint flowers are a fun, colourful way for kids to show their mums just how much they're loved! It's the perfect amount of messy and bright, and guaranteed to be a hit with your pupils! Your students can dive into their favourite colours, cover their hands in paint, and press them onto paper to create beautiful flower petals. The kids will love getting creative, and their mums will be left with a vibrant, heartfelt keepsake to cherish forever.

How to make it:

  1. Paint each student’s hand with their chosen colours and press them onto the paper to create the flower petals.
  2. After the paint dries, cut out and glue stems and leaves beneath the handprint flowers.
  3. Add options extras like glitter, buttons or sequins for extra razzle dazzle, if desired.

Paper plate flower bouquets

Keeping with the flower theme, this easy and fun craft is a great way for students to create a simple, lasting bouquet for Mother’s Day! By cutting paper plates into flower shapes and decorating them with colourful markers, crayons, and stickers, students can get as creative as they like. Once they're done, group the flowers together and wrap them in colourful paper or crepe paper for that bouquet feel. It's sweet, thoughtful, and not to mention a fun gift!

  4. Help students group the flowers together into a bouquet and wrap them in coloured paper or crepe paper for that bouquet feel.

Handmade Mother’s Day cards

This one’s a classic, so we couldn’t leave it off the list! Sometimes, a heartfelt message and a few fun drawings make the best gifts. Making a Mother’s Day card is a simple way for students to show their love and appreciation. With just a few materials and an afternoon, they can create personalised cards, adding their own special messages, drawings, and decorations. It’s a fun way to get creative while practising kindness and their art skills.

Here’s what you need:

  • Coloured paper or blank folded cards
  • Markers, crayons, or coloured pencils
  • Stickers, glitter, and other decorations
  • Glue sticks or tape

How to make it:

  1. Give each student a folded card or a piece of coloured paper to fold into a card.
  2. Let them decorate the outside of the card with their favourite colours, stickers, and a bit of glitter for that extra sparkle.
  3. Inside, they can write a sweet message like “Happy Mother’s Day” or “I love you.”

Beaded bracelets for a special keepsake

This one’s a little different than a classic paper-based craft but just as fun! Making bead bracelets is a fun and creative way for students to make something special for Mother’s Day. They can get creative with their colour choices and designs while also developing their fine motor skills. And, if you want to make it even more special, why not encourage your students to make two bracelets – one for them and one to match with their mum or caregiver?

Here’s what you need:

  • Colourful beads (variety of shapes and sizes)
  • Elastic thread or string
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  1. Cut a piece of elastic thread to fit comfortably around the child’s wrist. If making two, cut a slightly larger piece next for mum, you can use your wrist as a guide.
  2. Let students pick out beads and string them onto the thread to create their design.
  3. Once the bracelet is the right size, tie it into a knot to seal it off.
