Nature walks and hikes
One of the simplest yet most effective outdoor learning activities you can try is to embark on nature walks or hikes. Whether you're exploring a local park, a nearby forest, or a nature reserve, these excursions offer the opportunity to observe and learn about the natural world. Encourage your pupils to identify different plants, birds, and insects, or even organise a scavenger hunt to make the experience more interactive. Learning about nature and wildlife up-close can be so much more interesting and enjoyable for your students, which means that they’re far more likely to remember what they learn.
Gardening and planting
Summer is the ideal time to get your hands dirty and engage in some gardening activities. Whether you have a schoolyard garden or a small one within your classroom, cultivating plants teaches your pupils valuable lessons about responsibility, patience, and the natural world. From planting seeds to nurturing and observing the growth process, gardening offers a hands-on experience that fosters a deeper understanding of plants, ecosystems, and the importance of sustainable practices. What’s more, this is an easy activity that your pupils can do at home.
Astronomy and stargazing
This may well be an activity better reserved for a school trip - summer nights provide the perfect backdrop for exploring the wonders of the night sky. Try organising a star gazing session for your pupils, and you’ll be able to learn about constellations, planets, and celestial events. You can use mobile apps or telescopes to enhance the experience and encourage discussions about the vastness of the universe and our place within it (if your pupils are a bit older!). Learning about astronomy promotes critical thinking skills and ignites a sense of wonder and curiosity about the cosmos, so it’s definitely something worth doing!
History and cultural exploration
If you can, take advantage of the warm weather by taking the time to visit to visit any local historical sites, landmarks, or cultural centres nearby to learn about the heritage and traditions of your region. Immersing your students in the history and culture of your surroundings can help them gain a deeper understanding of the place they call home. You could engage in guided tours, participate in interactive exhibits, or organise historical re-enactments to make the learning experience immersive and engaging.
In short, summer is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors while embracing learning in a fun and interactive way. What’s more, all of these activities can be supplemented by the addition of some quality printed supplies. And that’s exactly where we can help.
