At EPSL, we know just how important it is to develop strong language and reading skills. If a student struggles with their language skills and the problem is never addressed, it can seriously hinder their education and development. Luckily, we provide a variety of tools and resources to ensure this doesn't happen, such as vocabulary and spelling books and personalised exercise books, which you can customise with chosen spelling lists and charts, as well as pupil record books and resources and fun language posters.
Providing students with the necessary tools to support their learning will help them feel confident in communication, encourage them to take part in classroom discussions, work better with others, and become more confident answering questions in the classroom, creating a more nurturing environment for their growth.
What is oracy?
Providing students with the necessary tools to support their learning will help them feel confident in communication, encourage them to take part in classroom divisions, work better with others, and become more confident answering questions in the classroom, creating a more nurturing environment for their growth.
To keep it short and simple, oracy refers to our ability to express ourselves. Although it can seem like second nature, it is actually a learned essential skill when it comes to building blocks of confidence and communication.
Generally, oracy includes skills such as being able to articulate oneself accurately, effectively, and fluently, as well as being able to listen, interpret, and understand spoken language. These skills are essential for your students' personal development both inside and outside of the classroom, so it's important to foster them wherever possible.
Why is it important to create a language-rich environment?
Communication is at the very foundation of all learning, and it's especially true the younger your students are. While your students will be able to enjoy and engage in all of their lessons, speaking and reading is a thread that runs through every subject, no matter the context or content. So it's crucial to constantly immerse your students in stimulating and fun language-rich environments where they have the opportunity to learn new words so it can have a positive knock-on effect on their other lessons.
So, how do you create a language-rich environment? Well, there are many ways you can do it! It’s important to remember that each child is unique and what works well for one student may not be the best course of action for another. The best way to ensure success is to first assess your students' learning styles and tailor the environments to them.
Some examples of language-rich environments recommended by the government include:
- Reading stories aloud
- Sharing books and encouraging children to look at pictures
- Painting new shapes and colours
- Observing nature and learning the names of new plants and animals
- Learning songs or rhymes together
- Imaginative play
