The Reading Game
The Reading Game is a sure fire way to get young people reading. It is quick and easy to set up and is gripping and highly motivating for any age from 8 to 16 years old.
It can be used with any books and any number can play. It introduces fiction genres and is instantly adapted to any library. It is for both fiction and non- fiction. It encourages wide reading and is extremely flexible.
Some children and young people restrict their reading to one genre, or worse hardly read at all. The Reading Game is the answer to this problem because it introduces a wide range of books in a fun and imaginative way. It is totally flexible - you choose the books according to the children you are working with. You'll find that at the end of a session children are queuing up to borrow books that they would never have dreamt of reading!
HMIE Scotland have produced a short film about the Reading Game (originally called the Genre Game). You can view this in the Good Practice section of their website : www.hmie.gov.uk
